Venues require costumes and soft goods to meet a flame-retardancy standard, and they will ask for the certificate rather than take anybody’s word. A costume described as fire retardant with no standard named is not usable in a professional house.

We specify inherently flame-retardant fabric where the property is in the fibre rather than a coating applied on top, because a coating degrades with laundering and a costume that complied on delivery may not comply by the end of a run. We supply the certificate with the order.

Construction is different for stage too. Quick changes need hidden closures that come apart in one movement and go back together in the interval, and a costume worn eight times a week has to survive laundering that a one-off outfit never faces.
